College Bound (Requiring Additional Support)
9 Pre-Algebra
10 Algebra 1
11 Geometry
12 Algebra 2
Note: Select Thinking Math instead of Geometry if you need an extra year to solidify Algebra skills. We sometimes refer to Thinking Math as Algebra 1.5. It's a great extra stepping stone to make sure you're ready for Algebra 2. Algebra 2 is the minimum level of math college readiness. Geometry concepts are used in higher level math courses, so taking Geometry if possible is a good idea.

NCAA Eligibility
Pre-Algebra, Thinking Math and Math 3 are NOT accepted math credits for NCAA eligibility.
Math Department Guidelines
Mathematics builds concept upon concept, and each skill must be fully understood before a student can progress to the next skill. When a student does not successfully complete a course, unit or module, it compromises their ability to develop the foundational skills necessary for future success.
In alignment with this structure, any student who does not pass either the first or second semester of a mathematics course is strongly encouraged to attend summer school to ensure full mastery of that level’s content. Students who do not pass both semesters of Algebra 1 are required to repeat the course in person the following academic year. Students have a four-year window to earn the three mathematics credits required for graduation.
I.E. fail 1st semester (S1) - stay in S2, and then go to summer school for S1
I.E. fail 2nd semester (S2) - go to summer school for S2
I.E. fail both semesters (S1 and S2) - must repeat the class in person the following year
Standard department policies:
- One math test retake per semester for any course that does not qualify for college credit (up to Algebra 2).
- Each math teacher will provide a course syllabus. Students should read and be familiar with the syllabus. Students who have questions should email their teacher or ask for help during class.
- Extra Credit is up to teacher discretion but is only allowed in assignments and class work categories.
- Late work is accepted up until the end of each module.
Recommendations for next school year:
- Recommendations for the next school year are completed by S1 teacher during the middle of the school year.
- Considerations may include a student's S1 grade, work ethic, diagnostic scores, and post-secondary plans.
- Student input is encouraged during this process but may not be the determining factor of the course recommended.
- Students failing S1 of Algebra 1 will be recommended for Algebra 1 again for the next school year. If the credit is made up during summer school, a parent/guardian needs to contact the counseling office to ensure the correct class is added to their schedule for the next school year.
- Students failing any other math course should have a conversation with their S1 math teacher regarding the best placement for the next school year.
English Language Arts (ELA) Guidelines
Science Guidelines
Suggested Science Sequence
All students need three science credits to graduate.
Required Course: All students are REQUIRED to pass either Biology or Pre-AP Biology to graduate.
Path of Least Resistance
9 Physical Science (Energy and Matter)
10 Biology
11 Astronomy, Environmental Science, Geology or Zoology (Choose two classes. These science electives can also be part of any of the other sequences if a student has an interest in them.)
Note: This sequence is for students who need to complete the absolute minimum requirements to graduate. This sequence does not adequately prepare a student for many post-secondary opportunities.
College Prep (Kansas Board of Regents Scholar)
Option 1
9 Biology or Pre-AP Biology
10 Chemistry or Pre-AP Chemistry
11 Physics or AP Physics 1
12 Optional: AP Biology, AP Chemistry or AP Physics 2 (Choose one or more based on your interest levels.)
Option 2
9 Physical Science (Energy and Matter)
10 Biology or Pre-AP Biology
11 Chemistry or Pre-AP Chemistry
12 Physics or AP Physics 1
Note: This recommended schedule can be condensed by taking more than one course per year, allowing a student to take multiple AP courses during high school. Your student’s science teacher can provide you with specific examples of recommended courses based on your student’s individual interests.
If you want to major in something science-related, it is recommended that you take as many science classes related to your major as possible in high school. If you simply enjoy science, you can take as many classes as you want, but choose them based on your interests.
Biomedical Science
9 Principles of Biomedical Science
10 Human Body Systems
11 Medical Interventions
12 Biomedical Innovation
Note: These are standalone courses that can be taken in addition to the courses listed above, but they will also count as a science credit. Students are still required to take Biology.

Opportunities at Derby High School
KSHSAA - Kansas State High Schools Activities Association
KSHSAA covers athletics and non-athletic activities.
- Athletics: all sport teams.
- KSHSAA Non-Athletics: Band, Choir, Orchestra, Debate/Forensics, STUCO, Scholars Bowl, KAY Club, Pantherettes, Cheer and E-Sports.
KSHSAA has rules about eligibility. Students shall be enrolled in eight and have passed six new subjects of unit weight the previous semester in order to be eligible for the current semester. Zero hour, Pr1me Time, Study Halls and/or Student Aides are excluded from consideration in determining eligibility as they are not considered classes of unit weight. Students taking any college or online course(s) must meet with their school counselor and the Athletic Director to verify eligibility.
This means that second semester grades in the Spring affect Fall, part of Winter sports season participation, and any other KSHSAA activity participation from August through December. Second semester eighth grade grades will affect high school participation. First semester grades affect any KSHSAA participation from January through May. The high school does not perform grade checks during the semester that affects participation. This is different from the middle schools. Learn more information in the Academic Guide.
Clubs
Clubs are not governed by KSHSAA and do not have eligibility rules. View a list of clubs available at DHS.
NCAA Eligibility
If you think you want to play sports in college, contact the DHS Athletic Office.
Students who are planning to enroll in college and wish to participate in NCAA Division I or II athletics or NAIA athletics should schedule a meeting with the Athletic Office to review the eligibility requirements before the end of their Sophomore year. They should also meet again every semester during their high school career with the Athletic Office to re-evaluate. Learn more about NCAA eligibility and requirements.
Athletic Office Contact Information:
- Russell Baldwin, Athletic/Activities Director, rbaldwin@usd260.com
- Susan Reaves, Athletic/Activities Administrative Assistant, sreaves@usd260.com
College Credit Options
Concurrent Courses
Concurrent credit college courses are taken in the building and taught by Derby High School teachers. The college credits are awarded from the individual colleges. They require college enrollment and tuition payment to receive credit. Representatives from the colleges will provide information to students regarding their application process and the payment of tuition for their courses.
Dual Credit Programs
Students can enroll in block programs where they take college courses at a college campus for half the day and courses at Derby High School for the other half of the day. Students must have approval from DHS before applying and enrolling in a block program. Students must turn in a completed Dual Credit packet to the counseling office every semester that they take dual credit courses. Students receive high school credit for completed college courses by turning in an official college transcript to the high school.
Contact the colleges below to learn more about their programs.
- Cowley Community College - FastTrack: (620)441-6335, fasttrack@cowley.edu
- Butler Community College - Early College Academy: (316)323-613, EarlyCollegeAcademy@butlercc.edu
- WSU Tech - Jump Start: (316)677-1047, hsadmissions@wsutech.edu
Advanced Placement (AP) Program
The AP Program offers college-level courses and exams that you can take in high school. AP Exams are standardized exams designed to measure how well you’ve mastered the content and skills of a specific AP course. Most U.S. colleges grant credit, advanced placement or both for qualifying AP scores.
Should I take an AP course and risk a lower grade?
You will receive a weighted grade. DHS policy will give you .025 credit for every .5 credit earned. Secondly, colleges know that all high school courses are not equal. Their evaluation of student grades focuses as much on the quality of the courses as the grades received. Finally, an AP course gives you an opportunity to learn a subject in greater depth and helps you develop skills that will be critically important to successfully study in college.
Work-Based Learning (WBL)
DHS offers many different Work-Based Learning opportunities including:
- Job Shadowing
- Internships (paid and unpaid)
- City of Derby partnerships
- AmeriCorps
- Various other WBL opportunities based on student interest
These are opportunities to get off campus and into the community during the school day. They mainly happen during senior year. They have attendance/GPA standards and require you to be in academic good standing.
Each of our 17 CTE Pathways have the opportunity for WBL Internships. The student must be enrolled in a CTE program at the technical or application level or be enrolled in a course of study related to the internship. View the CTE Pathways Guide to learn more information.

Science Course Recommendations for Incoming Freshman
Recommendations for Incoming Freshman
If students are interested in taking higher-level science classes (Pre-AP or AP), they should take Pre-AP Biology or Biology as a freshman. Pre-AP Biology is taught at an accelerated pace, and students go into greater depth on the topics and cover more material. Pre-AP Biology prepares students well for higher-level science classes.
If students performed well in their middle school science class (earned a B or above), they should plan to take Pre-AP Biology or Biology as a freshman.
OR (If students don’t fall into either of the categories above, we recommend the following)
- If they enroll in a math class higher than Algebra 1 as a freshman, it is recommended that students enroll in Pre-AP Biology or Biology; however, if they feel less confident about their science background, they may still enroll in Physical Science.
- If they are enrolling in Algebra 1 as a freshman, it is recommended that students enroll in Biology or Physical Science.
- If they are enrolling in Pre-Algebra or Daily Algebra as a freshman, it is recommended that students enroll in Physical Science.
Note: If a student takes Biology as a freshman, they should plan to take Chemistry and Physics before they graduate. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are required to complete the Kansas Scholars Curriculum requirements and are recommended for college readiness.
Biomedical Pathway
Principles of Biomedical Science: Students must complete an application, which requires a letter of recommendation. It is recommended that students be concurrently enrolled in Biology or Pre-AP Biology. Students cannot take Principles of Biomedical Science without taking another science class during their freshman year.

Your number of requests should equal 18 and total credits requested should be 8.5. You will add 4.5 credits (1.0 science, 3.0 electives and your PE Activity choice.) This is nine requests. You should have selected six alternate choices (up to eight is fine). Make sure your alternates aren’t mixed into your regular requests!
*For incoming Freshman, if your teacher recommended you for daily classes (English or Math lab), then you’ll only enter 2.0 electives.

Troubleshooting
If you’re not able to request a course due to some kind of restriction in the system, let a counselor know. They will be able to override and add the course when you turn in your pre-enrollment form.
Remember, if you request a course and are scheduled into the course, you will be expected to stay in and complete the course. Only request courses AND alternates that you are willing to take.

Overview
Pre-Enrollment is the process that students complete in a given school year to prepare for the next school year. Counselors prepare pre-enrollment materials which are presented during Pr1me Time classes. Information is shared regarding academic opportunities appropriate to each student’s academic year. Each student is also given their current transcript along with a pre-enrollment form. Students are then asked to review the course guide and work with their parents to pick appropriate courses and fill out their pre-enrollment form. Students will be able to see teacher recommendations in their Skyward account and should consult with their teacher if there is a question about the recommended placement. Students will use their pre-enrollment form to transfer course requests to Skyward, and then turn in the form to their Pr1me Time teacher. Based on the student’s choices, decisions will be made about which courses will be taught for the following school year. Low enrollment may cause a course to be canceled. As a result, students should choose courses carefully and choose their alternate choices equally as carefully. Once all requested courses have been entered into Skyward and level placements are verified the district office works with the scheduling software to complete the scheduling process.
Pre-Enrollment Forms: The paper form that students fill out with their course requests and alternate choices. A parent signature is requested and the form is returned. Students are advised to take a photo of their completed form before turning it in.
Course Requests: During the pre-enrollment process students make course requests. These are recorded both on their pre-enrollment form and in their Skyward account. A request does not mean a student is guaranteed to be scheduled into the course. Schedules are run giving priority to Seniors first, then juniors, sophomores, and lastly freshmen. Students are asked to choose course requests carefully as they will be scheduled into requested courses and not given an opportunity to change later.
Alternate Choices: Efforts are made to schedule students into courses that are requested. In a school that has over 2000 students we are limited by staffing and logistics in the seats we have to offer. Low enrollment requests and staffing changes have caused last minute changes to courses and programs in recent years which have required students to be enrolled in an alternate course request.
Popular Courses: Popular courses are requested by more students than are able to be accommodated. Some courses are requested at a 1:3 ratio meaning that for every seat that exists in the classroom, there are three students hoping to fill it. Only one student gets scheduled in the seat and the other two students are scheduled into an alternate choice. This is why students are asked to choose alternate choices carefully. Staffing and logistics determine the available number of seats in each course or program and it is not possible to meet all student demand.
Teacher Recommendations: As a part of the pre-enrollment process, teachers are asked to make a recommendation for the student’s next course and the appropriate level of rigor. These recommendations are entered into Skyward. Parents and students have an opportunity to review the recommendation and can contact the teacher with any questions or concerns. As teacher’s gather more information and data points throughout the semester they are able to update their recommendations before the scheduling software is run.
