| Even though there are no state assessments for Social Studies at this time, Derby Public Schools have adopted the Kansas state standards as the guide for its elementary curriculum. At each grade level there are suggested geography, economics, history and government benchmarks. To meet these diverse curriculuar needs, Derby Public Schools chose Nystrom Geography materials for each of the elementary grade levels. K-3 also uses financial literacy materials created for the state by the Kansas Council for Economic Education and housed on the Kan-Ed or Empowered Desktop website. To help meet the history and government standards, Derby Public Schools has fully embraced the use of the Read Kansas! materials designed by the Kansas State Historical Society. At the Fourth grade, Derby Public Schools has also adopted the Social Studies Alive! Regions of Our Country materials. To supplement the materials for the FIfth grade the district has adopted Social Studies Alive! America’s Past. The Read Kansas! , Nystrom and financial literacy materials are also utilized at these grade levels. Secondary Choice is the hallmark of the 6-12 curriculum. Each grade level chose textbooks to help meet their testable state standards. Sixth Grade Center At the 6th grade level, the primary focus is on ancient world history. The McDougal Littell World History: Ancient through Early Modern Times was the text chosen for this grade level. With a full complement of teaching materials and access to electronic textbooks, teachers will be able to provide guidance for the testable state standards. Derby Middle School 7th grade selected the McDougall Littell World Cultures and Geography to help meet their standards. This grade also is responsible for the district required Kansas History class. The Kansas Journey, written by the Kansas Historical Society staff to specifically cover Kansas State standards, is the textbook for this portion of the 7th grade curriculum. 8th grade uses Glencoe The American Journey to World War I © 2006. This edition was chosen because it allows the teachers to focus on the years covered by their standards without going into material reserved for the high school curriculum. Derby High School Teachers at the high school chose textbooks designed to meet the needs of their individual courses. The required social studies courses at the hgh school include: World History(10th),United States History (11th), and United States Government (12th). These courses cover the Kansas state standards.
